T-Shirts That Won’t Fly

A few years ago, I made my son change out of his Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower t-shirt (that was the name of a band, apparently) before we got to the airport for a cross-country flight, because I could see us getting held up at the security line by some over-zealous TSA agent.

Yes, it would be silly — but what does that have to do with anything?

Which of these shirts would be likely to cause you trouble on the security line? The first one references the popular-at-the-time television program Have Gun Will Travel, and therefore should be as harmless as a Simpsons t-shirt (assuming the TSA agent is an American over the age of 50). The second one references the tv show less obviously, with a more ominous graphic. The third one… I’m trying to decide whether it would be more problematic in a red state or a blue state.

The fourth one, I’m in favor of pulling the guy out of the line just on general principles.

  1. I’m not loving the way results are displayed here, because the percentages are misleading: I’m fairly certain 100% of the people voting picked ISIS as of of their choices, but the chart just shows (as I write this) that fifty-some percent of the votes cast were for ISIS. Even Newsweek handles statistics better than that.

  2. Pretty sure the 3rd one will get you “enhanced patdown”, just so the TSA agent can check under your armpits to make sure you don’t have guns stashed there.

    🙂

  3. Gotta agree with that comment — surely 100% or close to it of responders included ISIS in their choices, but the graphic obscures this.

BTW I was alive and watching TV during the original series, but too young to appreciate it. The title was extremely confusing! Maybe because it needs a comma, or maybe because I just didn’t have any experience with the language of want-ads.

  4. Maybe it’d work like you wanted if each were a yes/no instead

  5. Just to be clear, none of them should.

  6. I think that the TV show one could easily go either way. it looks nonthreatening at first glance, but I suspect if the screeners read the text, it would cause problems. Also, if the screeners let it go through, but someone later on (gate attendant, flight attendant, etc.) reads it, it could problems.

  7. That third shirt is like the guy’s “guns”: small caliber, large bore.

  8. Oh, thanks a bunch. Now I’m going to be singing that theme all day.

    “… reads the card of a man…”

  9. The survey allows voters to vote for more than one option.

  10. Is the question which WILL cause you trouble, or which SHOULD cause you trouble?

None of them SHOULD. All of them COULD.

My daughter had a “rifle” (actually a hunk of vaguely rifle-shaped plastic used for color guard) in a rifle case in checked baggage, and it took them an extra half-hour, after all the other baggage had been around the carousel a couple of dozen times, before they released it.

  13. Out of curiosity, where did this myth come from that Obama wants to confiscate guns? Has he even ever proposed any legislation that so much as restricts gun sales?

    • He’s a Democrat. That’s all the loons need.

  14. the plot to blow up the eiffel tower kicks ass
